Communication Practices and Social Tie Formation: A Case Study of Recreational Lifestyle Sports Cultures
2017
This case study examines contemporary recreational sports practitioners’ communication practices and social tie formation from the perspective of two lifestyle sports disciplines: climbing and trail running. Online survey results from 301 climbers and trail runners from Finland indicate that computer-mediated communication (CMC) has established its place in recreational lifestyle sports cultures; however, it has not done it at the expense of face-to-face (FtF) communication. Online interaction produces weak social ties with instrumental and informative value, but physical location is essential in establishing ties with emotional and appraisal value. This paper argues that it is the sports s…

Potential for cascading impacts of environmental change and policy on indigenous culture.
2022
AbstractGlobal environmental and societal changes threaten the cultures of indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLC). Despite the importance of IPLC worldviews and knowledge to sustaining human well-being and biodiversity, risks to these cultural resources are commonly neglected in environmental governance, in part because impacts can be indirect and therefore difficult to evaluate. Here, we investigate the connectivity of values associated with the relationship Ngātiwai (a New Zealand Māori tribe) have with their environment. We show that mapping the architecture of values-environment relationships enables assessment of how deep into culture the impacts of environmental change or pol…
Negative Engagement
2018
Negative engagement has steeply increased on the scholarly agenda along with the introduction of real time and social media, though negative experiences and emotions are as such not new phenomena. This chapter takes a future perspective and focuses on negative stakeholder engagement online in the context of organizations and brands, which increasingly face visible forms of negative stakeholder emotions or even fierce "shit storms". It begins by defining what negative stakeholder engagement refers to in the context of organizations and brands. The chapter introduces the development of negative engagement via related concepts. After introducing the concepts, the process and the outcomes of ne…

The theme in this issue of Ethnologia Fennica are transnational practices and connections in the everyday lives of migrants and non-migrants in Europe. The theme issue originates from a seminar titled “Transnational Processes and Practices among European Diasporas – Ethnological and Anthropological Approaches” held at the Department of History and Ethnology, University of Jyväskylä, Finland, in November 2013. The purpose of the seminar was, first, to bring together recent international research in ethnology and its sister disciplines, and second, to trace out how transnational and translocal perspectives have been utilized and understood in these disciplines when studying migration in conte…
"Melko onnellinen puhallinorkesteri" : tapaustutkimus Jyväskylän yliopiston puhallinorkesterista
2010
Living alone vs. living with someone as a predictor of mortality after a bone fracture in older age
2020
Abstract Background Living alone is a risk factor for health decline in old age, especially when facing adverse events increasing vulnerability. Aim We examined whether living alone is associated with higher post-fracture mortality risk. Methods Participants were 190 men and 409 women aged 75 or 80 years at baseline. Subsequent fracture incidence and mortality were followed up for 15 years. Extended Cox regression analysis was used to compare the associations between living arrangements and mortality risk during the first post-fracture year and during the non-fracture time. All participants contributed to the non-fracture state until a fracture occurred or until death/end of follow-up if th…
Seed Activation Scheduling for Influence Maximization in Social Networks
2018
This paper addresses the challenge of strategically maximizing the influence spread in a social network, by exploiting cascade propagators termed “seeds”. It introduces the Seed Activation Scheduling Problem (SASP) that chooses the timing of seed activation under a given budget, over a given time horizon, in the presence/absence of competition. The SASP is framed as a blogger-centric marketing problem on a two-level network, where the decisions are made to buy sponsored posts from prominent bloggers at calculated points in time. A Bayesian evidence diffusion model – the Partial Parallel Cascade (PPC) model – allows the network nodes to be partially activated, proportional to their accumulat…
Kuoro hyvinvoinnin rakentajana : tapaustutkimus Jyväskylän Musica-kuorosta
2010
Kuoroa koskeva aineisto hankittiin käyttäen kyselylomaketta, jossa selv…
The spanning tree based approach for solving the shortest path problem in social graphs
2016
This thesis is devoted to the shortest path problem in social graphs. Social graphs represent individuals and social relationships between them. As for social networking sites, their users are represented as vertices of the social graph, and the relationship which indicates whether two users are friends in the social networking site are represented as edges of the social graph. Therefore, social graphs are widely investigated by sociologists in order to determine rules and properties of various social processes. Analysis of such social graphs may be used in prediction of results of election, or recommendation systems. Calculation of many social graph metrics requires computation of shortest…
